DIY Guide: How to Make a Headboard with Upholstered Fabric and Buttons.

Materials you'll need:

  • Plywood

  • Foam padding

  • Fabric

  • Buttons

  • Thread

  • Needle

  • Drill

  • Upholstery needle

  • Batting

  • Staple gun

  • Scissors

  • Tape measure

  • Pencil

Step 1: Measure and cut the plywood Measure and cut the plywood to the size and shape you want for your headboard. This will depend on the size of your bed and your personal preference.

Step 2: Cut the foam padding Cut the foam padding to the same size as the plywood. You can use an electric knife or scissors to cut the foam.

Step 3: Attach the foam padding to the plywood Use a staple gun to attach the foam padding to the plywood. Be sure to pull the foam taut as you staple it in place.

Step 4: Cut the batting Cut a piece of batting that is large enough to cover the foam padding and wrap around the edges of the plywood.

Step 5: Attach the batting Place the batting over the foam padding and plywood, and use a staple gun to attach it in place. Pull the batting taut as you staple it in place.

Step 6: Cut the fabric Cut a piece of fabric that is large enough to cover the batting and wrap around the edges of the plywood. Leave extra fabric on all sides to allow for tufting.

Step 7: Mark the button placement Using a pencil, mark the button placement on the fabric. You can use a tape measure to ensure that the buttons are spaced evenly.

Step 8: Sew the buttons Using a needle and thread, sew buttons onto the marked spots on the fabric. Be sure to tie off the thread securely on the back of the fabric.

Step 9: Tuft the headboard Using an upholstery needle and thread, tuft the headboard by pulling the thread through the back of the plywood, through the foam padding, batting, and fabric, and then back down through the fabric, batting, and foam padding. Tie off the thread securely on the back of the plywood.

Step 10: Attach the fabric to the headboard Using a staple gun, attach the fabric to the back of the plywood, pulling it taut as you staple it in place.

Congratulations, you have successfully made an upholstered headboard with buttons!
